About the Unied Nations Human Rights Council

The Human Rights Council is an inter-governmental body within the UN system created by the UN General Assembly on 15 March 2006. It has the global mandate of ensuring the strengthening of human rights promotion and protection around the globe.  The body is composed of 47 States, geographically represented by the all continents. The members are elected for a period of three years and shall not be eligible for immediate re-election after two consecutive terms. For the period of 19 June 2010 to 18 June 2011, the 13 African States represented on the Council are Angola, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Djibouti, Gabon, Ghana, Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, Mauritania, Mauritius, Nigeria, Senegal, Uganda and Zambia. However, Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, who was a member, has been suspended by General Assembly Resolution A/65/265 adopted on 1 March 2011.

  

This follows the recommendation by the Human Rights Council in its Resolution A/HRC/S-15/2, adopted on 25 February 2011, in the 15th special session S-15/2 on the Situation of human rights in the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya.  

The main activities of the Human Rights Council are:

  • The periodic assessment of the human rights situations in all 192 UN Member States trough the Universal Periodic Review mechanism. The first period began in 2008 and will end in 2012;
  • Providing expertise on and advancing thematic human rights issues through the Advisory Committee and Complaints Procedure mechanism;
  • Work closely with the Special Procedures established by the former Commission on Human Rights and assumed by the Council.
