Human Rights Clinics

Human Rights Clinics - LLM/MPhil in Human Rights & Democratisation in Africa

The students on the LLM/MPhil programme in human rights and democratisation in Africa are assigned to human rights clinics which contributes to the work of the Centre’s research units and give the students practical experience and advance the Centre’s mission towards the realisation of human rights in Africa.

In 2018 there are ten clinics:

Advocacy

Members (2018): Henok Ashagrey Kremte (Ethiopia), Essa Njie (Gambia), Nelly Warega (Kenya)

Mandate:

  1. Production of video documentary
  2. Photo exhibition on older persons (Venda, Lesotho)
  3. Advocacy campaign on older persons and intersex persons (together with women’s rights group)

Business and human rights

  1. Document cases etc before international bodies on extractive industries and human rights for a database prepared by the African Commission’s working group on extractive industries
  2. Facilitation of BHR Dialogue on 13 and 14 March with SAHRC focusing on extractive industries

  2. Write a blog post for AfricLaw on the implementation of the Talibe case (Senegal) decided by the African Committee on the Rights and Welfare of the Child
  3. Advocacy around SADC Tribunal
