Access to Medicines

The Access to Medicines project focuses on Intellectual Property (IP), Human Rights, and Access to Medicine.

The Project monitors trends in international trade that impact Access to Medicines, at the regional and country levels; and also examines emerging measures to improve access to medicines in Africa.

The project further provides a forum for intergovernmental deliberations, supported by discussions with experts and exchanges of experience aimed at raising awareness of the current challenges to ‘Access to Medicines’ and generating best options and solutions to advance the cause.

To this end, the Access to Medicines project analysises IP, Human Rights and other selected topics related to Access to Medicines; and disseminates information through support for advocacy action, education and training.

The research, policy analysis and data collection is used to support advocacy action, debates and discussion by governments, experts and civil society.

The Access to Medicines functions are met through:

  • The Good Governance Programme (GGP)course on’ Human Rights and Access to Medicines’;
  • The ‘Access to Medicines’ Legal Clinic; and
  • Participation and support for advocacy programmes on ‘Access to Medicines’ across the globe.

In performing its functions, the Access to Medicines project collaborates with governments, organs of the UN, NGOs, the private sector, trade and industry associations, research institutes and universities worldwide. In particular, the GGP course on ‘Access to Medicines’ is collaborative work between the Centre for Human Rights and the Program on Information Justice and Intellectual Property (PIJIP) at the Washington College of Law.

The Access to Medicines project is supported in part by the Foundation Open Society Institute (FOSI) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
