The course will be 4 days, running from 16 – 19 July 2018 and will be at the University of Pretoria, South Africa.

About the course

Business and human rights is a cross-cutting are within the broader field of human rights, specifically looking at instances in which private or non-state actors are involved in activities around business, trade, and investment. The area has been growing at a rapid pace over the past 20 years, and in particular since the adoption of the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights in 2011.

The field of business and human rights cover a broad range of topics that include access to information, privacy, land use and ownership, environmental and social impacts. It typically surfaces in discussions around sectors that include extractives (oil, mining and gas), agriculture, private security, information and communication technologies, and the energy sector. It also looks at institutional and systemic issues such as economic and natural resource governance, illicit financial flows, stakeholder participation and engagement, and due diligence practices.

Topics include:

  • Gender in business and human rights
  • Community engagement and consultation
  • Public procurement and corruption
  • Labour
  • Extractive industries
  • Strategic litigation around business and human rights
  • Financial markets and human rights
  • Large scale projects, and environment and social impacts
  • Human rights impacts assessments


The course is aimed at students from across Africa, with limited space for external participants to take part in the course. The course will cover background and theory attached to each of the topics, but will aim to be as practical as possible, equipping the participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to advocate for and implement business activities that are responsible and respectful of human rights.


The course is organised by Josua Loots from the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria, and will include experts and lecturers from across the globe, bringing together years of experience in business and human rights.


The course fee is ZAR 3000 (US $ 300). This fee covers tuition, course materials, teas and lunch for the duration of the course.

The fee excludes transport and accommodation costs. Participants must arrange and fund their own accommodation, unless communicated otherwise by the organisers of the course.

A maximum of 45 participants are admitted each year, and admission is very competitive.

Applicants must indicate on the online application form whether they wish to apply for a partial or full scholarship, and provide sufficient motivation why they require financial assistance. Applicants must also indicate whether they would like to be considered for admission in the event that they are not granted a full or partial scholarship.
