Alumna appointed to UN Working Group

30 January 2018 -  The Centre for Human Rights wishes to congratulate Ms Meskerem Geset Techane, an alumna of the Class of 2011 of the LLM/MPhil in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa (HRDA) programme, who was recently appointed into the United Nations Working Group on the issue of discrimination against women in law and in practice (Working Group). She is among four other experts that make up the Working Group.

The Working Group’s focus is to identify, promote and exchange views, in consultation with States and other actors, on good practices related to the elimination of laws that discriminate against women. The Group is also tasked with developing a dialogue with States and other actors on laws that have a discriminatory impact where women are concerned. The group’s work is a much needed intervention at a time when equality between women and men requires relentless engagement. To find out more about the Working Group’s work, click here

Prior to her appointment, Ms. Techane worked in several capacities within the legal and human rights fields including as a high court judge, an academic, and a human rights advocate/expert with national, pan-African, international and inter-governmental organisations. She has over the years distinguished herself, among others, in the areas of litigation, research, advocacy, legal aid, and legal reform projects. She previously held the position of Deputy Director of the Institute for Human Rights and Development in Africa.

The Centre is proud to be associated with Ms. Techane and is confident that her appointment is a plus to the women’s rights cause. The Centre for Human Rights looks forward to a fruitful interaction with the Working Group especially as it pertains to its efforts aimed at advancing women’s rights in Africa.
