Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa alumnus appointed as Dean of Faculty of Law, University of Zimbabwe

14 March 2018 - The Centre for Human Rights congratulates Dr Innocent Maja on his recent appointment as Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Zimbabwe effective from 1 April 2018 and running for a period of four years.

Dr Maja is an alumnus on the Master’s in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa (HRDA) programme, hailing from the class of 2007 and was also a DAAD Scholar in the same year. He has considerable experience in international human rights law.

Dr Maja is also an accomplished and widely published author on different legal subject matters that includes minority rights, the law of contract, international terrorism and freedom of expression, with some of his texts referenced as authority in court judgments.

In 2016, the World Bank appointed Dr Maja as Technical Advisor to the team drafting the new Zimbabwean Companies Act.

The Centre celebrates Dr Maja on this new appointment, which again underscores the influence and impact its alumni are having across the African continent, especially in the field of academia - reversing the proverbial brain drain of students and academics, and contributing to the renewal of the African university as an important vector for the formation of development experts.

After graduating, Dr Maja also completed his doctorate at the Centre, under the supervision of Prof Michelo Hansungule.
