    GENEVA (15 April 2014) – The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Eritrea, Sheila B. Keetharuth, today hailed the release of all  Eritrean refugees and asylum seekers, some of whom had been held in detention for more than five years at the Nagad Police Academy in Djibouti.

  • Eritrea: UN expert warns about persisting human rights violations linked to the national service

    GENEVA (31 March 2014) – The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Eritrea, Sheila B. Keetharuth, today expressed deep concern about persisting human rights violations in the country in the context of the Eritrean national service. “National service dominates life in Eritrea entirely,” Ms. Keetharuth said at the end of an official visit to Germany and Switzerland from 17 to 28 March 2014 during which she collected first-hand information from Eritrean refugees and migrants on the human rights situation in Eritrea.

  • Questionnaire
In the discharge of her mandate, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Eritrea (Ms Sheila B. Keetharuth) has developed a questionnaire to facilitate the submission of information to the mandate. The objective of this questionnaire is to have access to precise information on alleged human rights violations in Eritrea. The questionnaire is available in English, Arabic and Tigrinya.

In June 2013 the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Eritrea delivered her first report at the 23rd session of the UN human rights council.  The report is available in English, Arabic and Tigrinya.

  • UN rights expert calls for international protection of Eritreans in their quest for safety 
From 11-20 November 2013, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Eritrea undertook a field mission to Tunisia and Malta where she interviewed Eritrean refugees.    She subsequently issued a press release on her preliminary findings.  The press release is available in English and Tigrinya.
